Research and Findings
Staff are also encouraged to conduct research on PBL issues. Papers on various aspects of Problem-based learning have been written and/or been presented by staff at conferences. Some of these include:
Paper Presentations
- “Does Problem-Based Learning Create A Better Student: A Reflection?” presented at the 2nd Asia-Pacific Conference on PBL, 2000 in Singapore.
- “PBL Curriculum Designers and their Conceptual Beliefs and Values: Case Studies of the Design of PBL Subjects in a Polytechnic” presented by Ms Serene Wan at the Symposium on Advances in Technology Education 2007.
Publications
- “An Account of Students’ Learning Experience
in an Engineering Problem-based Learning Subject: Implications for Implementation” by Ms Wee May Lin in Problem-based Learning, New Directions and Approaches, 2005.
Student Induction into PBL through Problem-solving and Process Skills (PSPS)
Since April 2002, techniques in problem-solving and process skills have been introduced as a core subject for all Year 1 Engineering students. This subject aims to provide students with a brief introduction of what Problem-based Learning is and to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare them to be good problem-solvers and effective learners.
Students are also given opportunities to research, analyse, synthesise and present relevant findings on a given problem in their PSPS projects.
Below are pictures of students engaged in sharing process skills in PSPS
classes.
