Developmental History
In July 1998, Temasek Applied Science School which was part of the
School of IT & Applied Science (ITAS), embarked on her maiden
journey into the Problem Based Learning (PBL) mode of teaching and
learning.
To
date, the school has a range of subjects with various degrees of
PBL implementation:
1. Individual PBL topic within a mainly non-PBL subject
2. Integrated PBL topics within a non-PBL subject
3. Fully PBL subject
4. Integrated PBL subject cluster
5. PBL subject via distance learning
A paper which traced the Applied Science School’s experience was
presented at the Second Asia Pacific PBL Conference hosted by
Temasek Polytechnic in October 2000 (Please refer to Conference
Paper : Prepare Students and Faculty for Educational Change:
Examples From the School of IT & Applied Science, Temasek
Polytechnic, Singapore for details).
As the school gains conviction of the benefits of PBL to student
learning, the concept of using a PBL Track to guide the PBL journey
for each student was articulated in June 2002. Each PBL track consists
of several PBL subjects.
Students would encounter PBL on several occasions during the three
years of studies at the school. With repeated exposure and time,
they develop process skills in addition to content acquisition. A
paper was presented at the International PBL Conference at Delaware
in June 2002 to share our experience with other PBL practitioners
(Please refer to Conference Paper: Our PBL Journey in Managing
Implementation Models at Temasek Applied Science School. for
details).
