Some issues they discussed included how to implement PBL in Home Economics subject, and possible challenges in such implementation. The participants also had the opportunity to craft their own PBL problems. For their problems, they used interesting and relevant contexts such as the recent rojak food poisoning incident, and the upcoming inaugural Singapore Youth Olympic Games hosted by Singapore in 2010. | | Discussion: Self and Peer Assessments in Problem-Based Learning: Reliability and Validity A group of lecturers from TP’s Business Sschool came together in February/ March 2009 to discuss assessment methods in PBL, specifically self and peer assessment. They felt that self and peer assessments provide a powerful feedback avenue for both students and tutors alike in a PBL framework, and were therefore important issues. The group focussed on the issues of reliability and validity of self and peer assessments in the PBL context. They examined areas such as:
-professional behaviour in assessment
-advantages and disadvantages of self and peer assessments
-case studies investigating feasibility, and
-the possible integration of summative and formative assessments in PBL. | | Discussion: PBL Facilitation A group of 3 lecturers from TP’s Informatics and Information Technology (IIT) School came together in December 2008 to share their research. They were interested in how to facilitate PBL when the students are relatively new to this method of teaching. The lecturers examined the issue from the perspectives of both lecturers and students. Some points discussed included: the need for formal training for facilitators, the role of the facilitator in managing learning as well as promoting student confidence, and the need for student induction. In particular, they looked at how different types of questions may be used to probe students in the PBL process. | | Book review A book published by TCPBL has been reviewed in the Journal of Access Policy & Practice, Vol.4, No. 1, 2006, pp. 78-80.
The reviewer concludes that:
"the book delivers its remit as a record of an ‘institutional’ development of problem-based learning and reflects the centrality of the student experience. The keynote papers, theoretical discussions and practical application of PBL will be of interest to educators involved in strategic management and teachers delivering problem-based learning approaches in practice."
