Institute of Maritime Operations & Systems explore Problem-based Learning in workshops at TP
Temasek Polytechnic welcomed 17 trainers from Institute of Maritime Operations & Systems (IMOS) on 23-25 November 2009. The group attended TP’s Problem-based Learning Foundation Programme and discussed how PBL might be implemented in their own context. Some of their learning points from the training included: the importance of crafting learning outcomes to guide teaching and assessment; using a FILA chart to scaffold students’ thinking processes and planning good questions in PBL faciltiation to manage students’ learning. The participants also tried their hand at crafting PBL problems for their own subjects, and reflected on the different curriculum implementation models that might be useful for their trainees.

Discussion: Self and Peer Assessments in Problem-Based Learning: Reliability and Validity
A group of lecturers from TP’s Business Sschool came together in February/ March 2009 to discuss assessment methods in PBL, specifically self and peer assessment. They felt that self and peer assessments provide a powerful feedback avenue for both students and tutors alike in a PBL framework, and were therefore important issues. The group focussed on the issues of reliability and validity of self and peer assessments in the PBL context. They examined areas such as: -professional behaviour in assessment -advantages and disadvantages of self and peer assessments -case studies investigating feasibility, and -the possible integration of summative and formative assessments in PBL.
Book review
A book published by TCPBL has been reviewed in the Journal of Access Policy & Practice, Vol.4, No. 1, 2006, pp. 78-80. The reviewer concludes that: "the book delivers its remit as a record of an ‘institutional’ development of problem-based learning and reflects the centrality of the student experience. The keynote papers, theoretical discussions and practical application of PBL will be of interest to educators involved in strategic management and teachers delivering problem-based learning approaches in practice."
